About This Text
Author: Joseph Karo
Avkat Rokhel is a 16th-century work of responsa by Rabbi Joseph Karo, author of the Shulchan Arukh. It consists of 217 answers to legal questions and includes occasional responsa by other rabbinic authorities that relate to topics addressed by Karo. Many of the responsa in Avkat Rokhel include detailed discussions of topics and rulings addressed more briefly in Karo’s Beit Yosef. In 1598, Karo’s son, Yehuda, published a portion of the work, on questions of family law, under the title “Shu”t Beit Yosef.” Avkat Rokhel was first printed in its current form in 1791 in Salonica.
