Jonah (“Yonah”) is one of 12 books of Minor Prophets (“Trei Asar”), marked by their shortness. It begins as Jonah tries to escape a mission of prophecy, ending up on a ship in the midst of a storm. The ship’s sailors throw him into the sea, where a great fish swallows him. Jonah prays in the stomach of the fish, the fish releases him, and he continues on his mission to convince the people of Nineveh to repent. The book is traditionally read publicly on the afternoon of Yom Kippur.
