About This Text
Author: Nathan Marcus Adler
Netinah LaGer, A Gift to the Convert, is a commentary by Rabbi Nathan Adler on the Aramaic translation of the Torah ascribed to Onkelos, a Roman convert to Judaism. First printed alongside several classic commentaries on the Torah as well as an anonymous early commentary on Onkelos, the work includes an introduction discussing Onkelos’ background and the religious perspectives that informed his translation. Many points of analysis, such as Adler’s view that Onkelos wrote his translation for a scholarly audience, have been subject to long-standing debate.
