About This Text
Composed: Livorno, Italy, 1774 CE
Shem HeGedolim (“The Names of the Great Ones,” based on I Chronicles 17:8) is the main historical work of the Chida (Rabbi Chaim Yosef David Azulai). It consists of two sections; the first, Maarekhet Soferim, contains biographies of sages from the period of the geonim through the period of the Chida. The second, Maarekhet Sefarim, is a bibliography of rabbinic works, among them lesser-known manuscripts that the Chida discovered in the course of his travels. The Chida composed Shem HaGedolim while in a quarantine camp in Livorno, Italy.
