King Saul’s power, like all power, is negotiated. Not everyone was happy at Mizpah at his selection as king. Perhaps they thought him weak or a coward. It was only when he proved himself at the battle of Jabesh-gilead that he secured the people’s confidence. The king must be victorious in battle if he is to be king. He must be able to deliver.
