9) Father precedes mother in all places. I might think that the father's honor is above that of the mother; it is, therefore, written "A man, his mother and his father you shall fear," to teach that they are both equal. But the sages said: The father takes precedence to the mother in all instances because both he and his mother are obliged to honor his father.
Sifra, Kedoshim, Section 1 9
Likewise, mention of
the father precedes
that of
the mother
almost
everywhere
in the Torah, as in the verse: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12). One
might
have thought that it is
due to
the fact
that the honor of the father takes precedence over the honor of the mother.
Therefore,
the verse states: “Every man shall fear his mother and his father”
(Leviticus 19:3), with the order reversed, which
teaches that both of them are equal…
Keritot 28a:29
The Gemara notes that the words “father of” appear three times in that same verse: “And his wife Hajehudijah bore Jered the
father of
Gedor, and Heber the
father of
Soco, and Jekuthiel the
father of
Zanoah.” This teaches that Moses was a father to all of the Jewish people in three respects:
A father in Torah, a father in wisdom,
and
a father in prophecy.
Megillah 13a:7
Rava said:
With regard to
that which the Sages said,
that
a gentile has no patrilineage, do not say
that it is
because they are
so
steeped in licentiousness that they do not know
the identity of their fathers with certainty,
but
if that identity
is known, we are concerned
that the paternity is recognized, with regard to the prohibition of intercourse with forbidden paternal relatives and other halakhic issues.
Rather,
even
when it is known, we are still not concerned.
Yevamot 98a:2
GEMARA:
From
the fact
that
the mishna
teaches
its ruling employing the term:
Primary categories, by inference, there are subcategories
of those primary categories. The Gemara asks: Are
their subcategories similar to them,
i.e., to their respective primary categories, so that the same
halakhot
apply to them,
or
are they
dissimilar to them?
The Gemara cites additional areas of
halakha
where there are primary categories and subcategories and considers the relationship between them:
With regard to Shabbat we…
Bava Kamma 2a:5-9
The import of
thy mother
is, you were in one womb. The mother is like matter and the father is like form. Very few people understand the nature of form.
Ibn Ezra on Deuteronomy 13:7:2
גם הוא אבי כל בני עבר, although, as we know from the description of Avraham as an עברי, a Hebrew, (a descendant of Ever) i.e. as someone believing in G’d the Creator being the sole G’d, and it might appear that Ever initiated this adherence to monotheism in his time, Shem, the father too, was a founder of preaching monotheism in his time. Anyone teaching and instructing others, especially in a way of life and philosophy, is called אבי, “father of.” We have come across this term as possessing such meaning already in Genesis 4…
Sforno on Genesis 10:21:2
לאלהי אביו יצחק TO THE GOD OF HIS FATHER, ISAAC — The duty of honouring one’s father is more imperative than that of honouring one’s grandfather (Genesis Rabbah 94:5); therefore the sacrifices are associated with the name of Isaac and not with that of Abraham.
Rashi on Genesis 46:1:2
Another matter: “But now, Lord, You are our Father” (Isaiah 64:7) – the Holy One blessed be He said to them: ‘What did you see that led you to seek Me now? Above it is written: “There is no one calling Your name, rousing himself to hold on to You, because You concealed Your face from us and melted us because of our iniquities” (Isaiah 64:6). Now that you see yourselves in distress, you come to Me and say: “You are our Father”? Even though everything is My handiwork, I wish to show Myself as Father and Maker only to one who performs My will,’ as it is stated: “Everyone who is called by My name…

She said to them
as follows:
Come and cry out [

in the streets and markets.
They went and cried out at night, saying: O Heavens! Are we
Jews
not your brothers; are we not children of one father; are we not children of one mother? How are we different from every
other
nation and tongue that you issue
such
harsh decrees against us? And
indeed the decrees

the Sages
made that day a festive day. And if it enters your mind

Again
Moses asked:
What
else
is written in it?
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said to him:
“Remember the Shabbat day to sanctify it”
(Exodus 20:8). Moses asked the angels:
Do you perform labor that you require rest

Again
Moses asked:
What
else
is written in it? “Do not take
the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Exodus 20:7), meaning that it is prohibited to swear falsely. Moses asked the angels:
Do you

that may lead you to swear…
Shabbat 89a:1
The Gemara answers: Both
are necessary, as had
the verse
written
only “for
his father,” I would say
that
this is the reason
that a nazirite
may not become impure for
his father:
Because it is merely a presumption
that he is his father, as one cannot be absolutely sure of the identity of one’s father.
However,
with regard to
his mother, whom we know gave birth to him,
perhaps
let him become impure to
bury
her.
The verse therefore states: “His mother.”…
Nazir 49a:2-3
4) (Vayikra 21:2) ("Only for his flesh that is near to him, his mother and his father, his son and his daughter and his brother.") "Only for his flesh that is near to him": "flesh" is his wife, viz. (Vayikra 18:12) "She is the flesh (i.e., the wife) of your father." "that is ner": to exclude one that was betrothed to him. "to him": to exclude one that he divorced. Let it be written (only) "to his mother." Why need "to his father" be written? (i.e., it can be derived a fortiori), viz.: If he makes himself tamei to his mother, who becomes a challalah (by relations with one who is unfit)…
Sifra, Emor, Section 1 4
The Gemara asks:
What are the circumstances? If we say that
his wife
conceived after he grew two
pubic
hairs and
the baby
was born before he grew a beard around
his genitals,
is there such a long interval
between these two times to allow for carrying the child to term?
But doesn’t Rabbi Kruspedai say: The entire time
during which it is possible to judge and sentence
a stubborn and rebellious son is only three months,
the time between the appearance of two pubic hairs and the growth of a beard around the genitals? Consequently…
Sanhedrin 69a:6-7
The Gemara relates:
Shmuel’s father would sell produce during
the period of the
early
market
price,
when produce is cheap,
for the early
market
price. His son Shmuel
acted differently, and
would keep the produce and sell it during
the period of the
late
market
price,
when produce is expensive,
for the early
market
price. They sent
a message
from there,
Eretz Yisrael: The practice
of the father is better than
that
of the son…
Bava Batra 90b:6
The court tells the witnesses:
Therefore, Adam
the first man
was created alone, to teach you that
with regard to
anyone who destroys one soul from the Jewish people,
i.e., kills one Jew,
the verse ascribes him
blame
as if he destroyed an entire world,
as Adam was one person, from whom the population of an entire world came forth.
And
conversely,
anyone who sustains one soul from the Jewish people, the verse ascribes him
credit
as if he sustained an entire world.

Sanhedrin 37a:13-14
Rather,
it must be understood that when Jacob met Rachel,
he said to her: Will you marry me? She said to him: Yes, but my father,
Laban,
is a swindler, and you will not be able to
outwit
him.
Jacob alleviated her fears, as
he said to her
that he is her father’s brother, referring not to their familial affiliation but rather to his ability to deal with her father on his level, as if to say:
I am his brother in deception. She said to him: But is it
really
permitted for the righteous to be involved in deception? He said to her: Yes…
Megillah 13b:3
Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya responded and said: You are better for the Jewish people than a father and mother, as a father and mother
provide benefit
in this world,
and
my teacher
provides benefit
in this world and in the World-to-Come.
Sanhedrin 101a:16
Rabbi Akiva said: One time Rabbi Yishmael ben Loga related to me: One time I and one of the descendants
of the House of Avtinas
went out to the field to collect herbs, and I saw that he laughed and he cried. I said to him: Why did you cry? He said to me: I was reminded of the honor of my forefathers,
how important they were in the Temple. I said to him:
And why did you laugh? He said to me: The Holy One, Blessed be He, is going to restore it to us in the future
and we will be honored again…
Yoma 38a:14
The verse states:
“And she caught him by his garment, saying:
Lie with me” (Genesis 39:12).
At that moment his father’s image [
deyokeno
] came and appeared to him in the window.
The image
said to him: Joseph,
the names of
your brothers are destined to be written on the stones of the ephod, and you
are to be included
among them. Do you desire your name to be erased from among them, and to be called an associate [
ro’eh
] of promiscuous women? As it is written: “But he who keeps company with harlots wastes his riches”
(Proverbs 29:3)…
