Fire-Offerings

A
אשה ריח FOR A FIRE OFFERING OF [PLEASING] ODOUR — This refers only to the meal-offering and the oil mentioned in v. 9, but the wine is not a fire-offering, since it is not put on the fire.
Rashi on Numbers 15:10:1
AND THE LORD SMELLED THE SAVOUR OF APPEASEMENT
. It is also written “a fire offering, a savour of appeasement” (Lev. 1, 13). With reference to the term “fire offering” we have heard the following. Fire and smoke are joined together, there being no smoke without fire, as it is written: “Now Mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire” (Ex. 19, 18).
Zohar, Noach 31:233
לאשי [MY FOOD] FOR MY FIRE OFFERING — i.e., the fat-portions that are assigned for the fire offerings of My altar (Sifrei Bamidbar 142:2).
Rashi on Numbers 28:2:4
A BURNT-OFFERING. “[He shall burn it] with the intention that it should be a burnt-offering [and not an offering of another category]. ‘ISHEIH’ (A FIRE-OFFERING). When he slaughters it he should slaughter it with the intention of [burning it by] fire, [as will be explained further on]. Wherever the word
isheih
occurs, it is an expression of fire. PLEASING — it is pleasing to Me that I have commanded and My will was done.” This is the language of Rashi.
Now the Rabbi did not explain what is meant by “the intention of [burning it by] fire…
Ramban on Leviticus 1:9:1
Pleasing fragrance.
This instructs us about the proper intention we should have when bringing an offering. Instead of focusing on the fact that the offering atones for our sin, we should consider it as only a pleasing fragrance of what we intend to do in the future. This is comparable to a good scent that travels a distance and indicates that the source of the scent is something good, in the same way, an offering proclaims that we will do good deeds in the future.
A burnt-offering (עולה):
To grow higher (לעלות) in our spiritual level and the importance of our deeds and character…
HaKtav VeHaKabalah, Leviticus 1:9:2
THE THIGH OF HEAVING AND THE BREAST OF WAVING. “This expression is similar to the verse, [
the breast of the wave-offering, and the thigh of the heave-offering
],
which is waved, and which is heaved up
. ‘Waving’ is an expression for moving to and fro [in a horizontal direction]. ‘Heaving’ is an expression for moving up and down. But why Scripture divided them, mentioning ‘heaving’ in connection with the thigh and ‘waving’ in connection with the breast, I do not know, for both of them [required] waving and heaving.” Thus far is the language of Rashi…
Ramban on Leviticus 10:15:1
When the flaming fire goes forth and the Left is awakened, smoke also goes up, as it says, “Now mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the Lord descended upon it in fire” (Ex. 19, 18); because when fire descends, smoke and fire are intermingled, and so the whole is on the side of the left. This is the inner meaning of the verse, “Yea, my
hand
hath laid the foundations of the earth, and my
right hand
hath spread out the heavens” (Is. 48, 13), i.e. by the power of the Right above…
