Foreign Women
Sources
A
A slave woman: “The woman and her children shall belong to her owner.” A Gentile woman. Rebbi Joḥanan said in the name of Rebbi Sineon ben Ioḥai, it is written: “You shall not conclude marriage with them”. And it is written: “For he will divert your son from after Me.” Your son from a Jewish woman is called your son; but your son from a Gentile woman is not called your son but her son. Jacob from Kefar Naboraia went to Tyre. They came to ask him, may one circumcise the son of a Gentile woman on the Sabbath? He wanted to permit it from the verse: “They determined their genealogies for their…
Jerusalem Talmud Yevamot 2:6:4-5
Solomon allied himself by marriage with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He married Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her to the City of David [to live there] until he had finished building his palace, and the House of G
OD
, and the walls around Jerusalem.
I Kings 3:1
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel of the family of Elam spoke up and said to Ezra, “We have trespassed against our God by bringing into our homes foreign women from the peoples of the land; but there is still hope for Israel despite this. Now then, let us make a covenant with our God to expel all these women and those who have been born to them, in accordance with the bidding of the Lord and of all who are concerned over the commandment of our God, and let the Teaching be obeyed.
Ezra 10:2-3
King Solomon loved many foreign women in addition to Pharaoh’s daughter—Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Phoenician, and Hittite women, from the nations of which G
OD
had said to the Israelites, “None of you shall join them and none of them shall join you, lest they turn your heart away to follow their gods.” Such Solomon clung to and loved. He had seven hundred royal wives and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned his heart away. In his old age, his wives turned away Solomon’s heart after other gods…
I Kings 11:1-7
Their daughters. Rebbi Eleazar said, in seven places it is written
do not intermarry with them
. Rebbi Abun said, to forbid seven peoples. Rebbi Joshua from Ono stated, to forbid their eggs. Rebbi Ismael stated,
and the ostrich’s daughter
. This is the ostrich’s egg.
Jerusalem Talmud Shabbat 1:4:13
§ The mishna teaches:
And
in
any
case
where
a woman
cannot
join in betrothal
with him
or with others, the offspring is like her. This ruling refers specifically to a Canaanite maidservant or a gentile woman. The Gemara asks:
From where do we
derive that betrothal with
a Canaanite maidservant
is ineffective?
Rav Huna says: The verse states
that Abraham commanded his slaves:
“You abide here with [
im
] the donkey”
(Genesis 22:5), which alludes to the fact that his slaves belong to
a nation [
am
] similar to a donkey…
Kiddushin 68a:13-68b:9
The Gemara explains the reason for this opinion:
Since
a nine-year-old boy
is fit to
engage in
intercourse, he also imparts ritual impurity as
one who experienced
ziva
. Ravina said: Therefore,
with regard to
a female gentile child
who
is three years and one day old, since she is fit to
engage in
intercourse
at that age,
she also imparts impurity as
one who experienced
ziva
.
The Gemara asks: Isn’t that
obvious?
The Gemara explains: It was necessary to state this ruling…
Avodah Zarah 37a:1-2
“One who copulates with a Gentile woman,” etc. Rebbi Ismael stated: This is one who marries a Gentile woman, sires children, and from her raises enemies of the Omnipresent. It is written:
Phineas ben Eleazar ben Aharon the priest saw
. What did he see? He understood what happened and remembered practice: “One who copulates with a Gentile woman, zealots strike him.” It was stated: not with the agreement of the Sages. Would Phineas act against the Sages? Rebbi Jehudah bar Pazi said, they wanted to excommunicate him had not the Holy Spirit jumped on him and declared that
an eternal…
Jerusalem Talmud Sanhedrin 9:7:4
§
When Rav Dimi came
from Eretz Yisrael to Babylonia,
he said: The court of the Hasmoneans issued a decree
that one
who engages in intercourse with a gentile woman is liable due to
his violation of prohibitions represented by the letters:
Nun
,
shin
,
gimmel
,
alef
. He is liable for engaging in intercourse with
a menstruating woman [
nidda
]
who did not immerse in a ritual bath and remains impure. Although by Torah law there is no impurity of menstruation with regard to gentiles…
Sanhedrin 82a:7-13
The Gemara asks:
And Rav, this
word
“abomination”
(Deuteronomy 23:19), from which Levi derives his ruling that an animal given by a husband for intercourse with his menstruating wife is considered payment to a prostitute,
what does he do with it?
The Gemara answers that Rav
requires this
word for
that which Abaye
said.
As Abaye said:
With regard to
a gentile prostitute, her payment is prohibited.
What is the reason? It is written here,
with regard to payment to a prostitute,
“abomination,” and it is written there…
Temurah 29b:17-23
It is written: “They came to the vineyards in direction of Timna.” Rav Samuel ben Rav Isaac said, this teaches you that his father and mother were showing him the vineyards in direction of Timna sown in several kinds and saying to him: My son, just as their vineyards are sown with several kinds so their daughters are sown with several kinds. “And his father and mother did not know that this was from the Eternal, that he was looking for a pretext from the Philistines.” Rebbi Eleazar said, In seven places it is written: “Do not contract marriage with them…
Jerusalem Talmud Sotah 1:8:4
It is from the roots of the commandment [that it is that] since most of the masses — in their stupidity — are drawn after the counsel of their wives, if one marries the “daughter of a foreign god,” she will draw him to worship idolatry. And also because her children that are born from her will be raised towards idolatry. And woe to the one who disqualifies his seed. From the laws of the commandment is that which they, may their memory be blessed, said (Sanhedrin 81a) that zealots would attack one who has sexual intercourse with an Aramean (gentile) publicly in the eyes of ten or more Israelites…
Sefer HaChinukh 427:2-4
Once Samson went down to Timnah; and while in Timnah, he noticed a certain young Philistine woman.
Judges 14:1
“Why will you not listen to me?” she pleaded. “Since I am the wife of another man, no one will know that there is anything between us.” He replied: “Your virgins are forbidden to us, how much more so is the wife of a man,” as it is said:
Neither shall thou make marriages with them
(Deut. 7:3). That is why he would not listen to her. R. Judah the son of Nahman explained: This may be compared to an idolater who tells an Israelite: “I have some delicious food for you.” “What kind of food do you have?” he asks. “The meat of a pig,” he replies…
Midrash Tanchuma, Vayeshev 8:6
Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi further commanded his sons:
Do not sit on the bed of an Aramean woman.
This advice is explained in different ways.
Some say
it means
that you
should
not go to sleep without reciting
Shema
,
as a Jew who does this acts like a gentile.
And some say
it means
that you
should
not marry a convert,
i.e., a Jewish woman who was once an Aramean.
And some say
that Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi meant the
actual
bed of
an Aramean woman…
Pesachim 112b:4-5
[AND THE LORD SPOKE UNTO MOSES, SAYING.] Scripture earlier stated,
unto all the congregation…of Israel
, because the commandments, which followed, are obligatory upon all of Israel. Strangers have no part in them. Scripture now begins to mention the punishment for harlotry, which will befall anyone who lives in the Land of Israel, be he native born or resident alien. It begins with the most severe of them all, namely, with the individual who gives of his seed to Molech, that is, the one who has intercourse with a woman who worships idols.
Ibn Ezra on Leviticus 20:1:1
Also at that time, I saw that Jews had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, and Moabite women;
Nehemiah 13:23
A moon of days.
The Torah does not simply state, “month” to teach that just as the light of the moon is inferior to the light of the sun, so too the non-Jew is less desirable than a Jewish woman.
Kitzur Ba'al HaTurim on Deuteronomy 21:13:1
However, that which is written: “Those who pass through the valley of weeping”
(Psalms 84:7), which implies that the sinners nonetheless descend to Gehenna, should be explained as follows:
There
it speaks of
those who are liable at that time
for punishment
in Gehenna, but our father Abraham comes and raises them up and receives them.
He does not leave the circumcised behind and allow them to enter Gehenna,
except for a Jew who had relations with a gentile woman,
in punishment for which
his foreskin is drawn…

of a woman who gives birth,
Beit Shammai deem

The halakhic status of the blood of the gentile woman is
