A
MISHNA:
Anyone who is engaged in
the study of
Bible, and in
the study of
Mishna, and in
the
desired mode of behavior,
i.e., he performs labor and generally acts in an appropriate manner,
will not be quick to sin, as it is stated: “And a threefold cord is not quickly broken”
(Ecclesiastes 4:12). One who is involved in all three of these activities will not sin easily.
And anyone who does not engage in
the study of
Bible, nor
the study of
Mishna, nor
the
desired mode of behavior, is not part of society,
i.e…
Kiddushin 40b:5
Rav Shimi bar Ashi
said to him: You reminded me of something that Rabbi Yosei, son of Rabbi Ḥanina,
said,
as Rabbi Yosei, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, said: What is
the meaning of
that which is written: “In a land through which no man has passed and where no person [
adam
] has settled”
(Jeremiah 2:6)? This verse is difficult;
since it is
a land through which
no
person
has passed, how
could anyone
have settled
there permanently? The statement that “no person has settled there” is redundant…
Berakhot 31a:15
The Gemara returns to discussing the incident involving Elisha:
“And the men of the city said to Elisha: Behold, please, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees,
but the water is bad and the land miscarries” (II Kings 2:19). The Gemara asks:
But if the water is bad and the land causes women to miscarry, what is pleasant
about
it? Rabbi Ḥanin says: The grace of a place is upon its inhabitants,
i.e., people are fond of their hometown despite its shortcomings.
Rabbi Yoḥanan says: There are three graces
that have a similar impact:
The grace of a place…
Sotah 47a:4
The Sages taught: One who sees the houses of Israel inhabited
and tranquil
recites: Blessed…Who establishes the border of the widow.
One who sees them
in ruins he recites: Blessed…the true Judge.
One who sees
the houses of the nations of the world inhabited recites: “The Lord will destroy the house of the proud,
but He will establish the border of the widow” (Proverbs 15:25).
And
if he sees them
in ruins he recites: “God of vengeance, Lord, God of vengeance, shine forth”
(Psalms 94:1).
Berakhot 58b:1
Come
and
hear
a challenge from a
baraita
to the previous opinion with regard to the size of the world: The size of
Egypt was four hundred parasangs by four hundred parasangs, and Egypt is one-sixtieth
of the size
of Cush, and Cush is one-sixtieth of the world, and the world is one-sixtieth
the size
of the Garden
of Eden,
and the Garden
of Eden
is one-sixtieth of Eden, and Eden is one sixtieth
of the size
of Gehenna.
Therefore,
it is found that the entire world is like a pot cover…
Pesachim 94a:9-11
(Numb. 33:1:) “These are the stages of the Children of Israel.” [The matter] is comparable to a king whose son was ill. He brought him to a certain place to heal him. When they returned, his father began recounting the stages, “Here we slept. Here we cooled off. Here you had a headache.” Similarly the Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moses, “Recount to them all the places where they provoked Me.” It is therefore stated (in Numb. 33:1), “These are the stages....” Another interpretation: Why did all these stages (places) merit to be written in the Torah? Since they received (accommodated) Israel…
Midrash Tanchuma, Masei 3:1
The Gemara asks:
And from where do we
derive
that
when
the Sages
have
an accepted
tradition it
is a
substantial
matter,
meaning that the tradition is reliable?
Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba said
that
Rabbi Yoḥanan said: What
is the meaning of that
which is written: “You shall not cross your neighbor’s border, which they of the old times have set
in your inheritance that you shall inherit” (Deuteronomy 19:14)? It means that
you shall not cross the border that the early
generations
set…
Shabbat 85a:2
Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Neḥemya, Rabbi Yehuda says: “Go you [
lekh lekha
]” – twice, one from Aram Naharayim and one from Aram Naḥor. Rabbi Neḥemya says: “
Lekh lekha
” – twice, one from Aram Naharayim and Aram Naḥor, and one when He flew him from [the Covenant] between the Pieces and brought him to Ḥaran.
That is what is written: “Your people [
amekha
] will volunteer on your day of battle [
ḥeilekha
]” (Psalms 110:3) – I was with you [
imekha
] when you volunteered on My behalf to descend into the fiery furnace…
Bereshit Rabbah 39:8
And Rava bar Meḥasseya said that Rav Ḥama bar Gurya said Rav said: A person should always seek and dwell in a city whose settling
took place in the
recent
past, meaning that it was recently established,
as due to the fact that its settling is recent its sins are few,
as its residents have not yet had the opportunity to commit many sins there.
As it is stated
that Lot said to the angel:
“Behold, here is this city that is close to run away to and it is small”
(Genesis 19:20)…
Shabbat 10b:8
MISHNA:
And these
on the following list
are the ones
who are
disqualified
by the Sages from bearing witness due to their unseemly behavior, as they are considered wicked individuals guilty of monetary transgressions:
One who plays with dice [
bekubbiyya
]
for money,
and one who lends
money
with interest, and those who fly pigeons, and merchants
who trade in the produce
of the Sabbatical
Year, which may be eaten but may not be sold as an object of commerce…
