Shimon the Righteous was a high priest and teacher at a time of political flux in the region. He is credited with meeting Alexander the Great and convincing him not to attack Jerusalem. He was the first teacher mentioned in Pirkei Avot and among the last surviving members of the Great Assembly, a Rabbinic legislative body that existed in the Second Temple period .
