(This is a preview of what your collage can ultimately look like- but the link to view the completed collage is here).
This lesson is intended for students in Grades 4-12. Please note this sheet uses a particular model (putting the entire Seder into an interactive collage) but this could easily be adapted to focus on only one component of the Seder, or on making an interactive collage of the Kearah (Seder plate). The level of difficulty can easily be modified by the teacher to incorporate anything from creating links to the basic text of the Haggadah to creating links to commentaries on the Haggadah. This sheet is concerned with an activity component- namely, designing an interactive collage of the Seder to demonstrate knowledge!
Lesson Plan
1. Determine which portion of the Seder you would like your students to focus on. Perhaps you want the students to be able to create a visual collage of the entire Seder, step by step. Alternatively, perhaps you want the students to understand what is on the Kearah. Or maybe you want them to do a deep dive into the ten plagues.
3. Students should save the images they find to their camera roll (if using a phone or tablet) or to their computer.
4. Students should upload the images into a collage using PicCollage (an app) or BeFunky.com (if on a computer). Please note that students will need to make an account to use BeFunky.com. If they do not have their own email address, you may want to ask parents to assist and sign them up with parent emails.
5. Students should save their completed collage to their device. Then, they can upload their collage to ThingLink or Genially, both of which are interactive collage makers. Once again, students will need to create an account to use these sites, so if they do not have their own, they will need to log in with a parent's email. Once on ThingLink, students will be able to insert buttons that allow text to appear when one mouses over the collage, or that allow an individual to click on a button in order to be led to a pertinent text. This is where Sefaria comes in- have students copy and paste texts from Sefaria into pop-ups that appear when one mouses over the relevant part of the collage. Alternatively or additionally, have them create buttons that link to the text on the Sefaria website! If your students want to get extra-creative, they can also link to other media (such as pertinent video links) in their collage.
6. Students can save and then share their collage- choosing whether it is public to all or unlisted (which means only those with the link can view it).
Voila- your students have now created an interactive digital collage that demonstrates their knowledge of a particular part of the Seder or Passover Haggadah!
EXAMPLE
Please click here to view my Seder Thinglink. As you can see, there are small buttons in the left-hand corner of each image in the collage. When you click them, you find the relevant part of the Haggadah (from Sefaria) linked to that portion of the collage! It's pretty cool to have the whole Haggadah encompassed in picture form and accessible from one location.
