פָּלַל (b. h.) to separate, divide.
Pi. - פִּילֵּל to arbitrate, intercede; trnsf. to pray. Sabb. 55ᵇ (ref. to פ̇ח̇ז̇, Gen. XLIX, 4) פִּ֗ילַּלְתָּה ח̇לתה ז̇רחה וכ׳ thou didst plead, thou didst pray, thy prayer rose &c.
Hithpa. - הִתְפַּלֵּל,
Nithpa. - נִתְפַּלֵּל (denom. of תְּפִלָּה) to pray. Ber. V, 1 להִתְפַּלֵּל, v. כּוֹבֶד. Ib. היו שוהים … ומִתְפַּלְּלִים used to tarry a while (in meditation) and then say the prayers. Ib. IV, 3 יִתְפַּלֵּל שמונה עשרה should pray the eighteen benedictions. Ib. 4 מִתְפַּלֵּל תפלה קצרה says a short prayer. Y. ib. 8ᵇ top ספק נתפ׳ ספק לא נ׳ if he is in doubt whether he has or has not said his prayers; a. v. fr.
אֲמַר לֵיהּ אֵלִיָּהוּ לְרַב יְהוּדָה אֲחוּהּ דְּרַב סַלָּא חֲסִידָא... וּכְשֶׁאַתָּה יוֹצֵא לַדֶּרֶךְ, הִמָּלֵךְ בְּקוֹנְךָ וָצֵא.
מַאי הִמָּלֵךְ בְּקוֹנְךָ וָצֵא? אָמַר רַבִּי יַעֲקֹב אָמַר רַב חִסְדָּא: זוֹ תְּפִלַּת הַדֶּרֶךְ. וְאָמַר רַבִּי יַעֲקֹב אָמַר רַב חִסְדָּא: כׇּל הַיּוֹצֵא לַדֶּרֶךְ צָרִיךְ לְהִתְפַּלֵּל תְּפִלַּת הַדֶּרֶךְ.
Elijah the Prophet said to Rav Yehuda brother of Rav Sala Ḥasida... when you set out on a journey, consult with your Creator, and then set out. The Gemara asks: What is the meaning of “Consult with your Creator, and then set out?” Rabbi Ya’akov said that Rav Ḥisda said: That is the traveler’s prayer. And Rabbi Ya’akov said that Rav Ḥisda said: It is not only good advice, but established halakha that anyone who sets out on a journey must recite the traveler’s prayer prior to embarking on his journey.
May it be Your will, Eternal One, our God and the God of our ancestors,
שֶׁתּוֹלִיכֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם וְתַצְעִידֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם וְתַדְרִיכֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם, וְתִסְמְכֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם,
that You lead us toward peace,
support our footsteps towards peace,
guide us toward peace,
וְתַגִּיעֵנוּ לִמְחוֹז חֶפְצֵנוּ לְחַיִּים וּלְשִׂמְחָה וּלְשָׁלוֹם.
and make us reach our desired destination, for life, joy, and peace.
אם דעתו לחזור מיד אומר וְתַחְזִירֵנוּ לְשָׁלוֹם
(and if you're planning to return immediately say “and return us in peace”)
וְתַצִּילֵנוּ מִכַּף כָּל אוֹיֵב וְאוֹרֵב וְלִסְטִים וְחַיּוֹת רָעוֹת בַּדֶּרֶךְ,
May You rescue us from the hand of every enemy [foe, hater], ambusher [waylayer], bandits and wild animals along the way,
וּמִכָּל מִינֵי פֻּרְעָנֻיּוֹת הַמִּתְרַגְּשׁוֹת לָבוֹא לָעוֹלָם,
and from all manner of punishments [calamity, trouble] that assemble to come to Earth.
וְתִתְּנֵנוּ לְחֵן וּלְחֶסֶד וּלְרַחֲמִים בְּעֵינֶיךָ וּבְעֵינֵי כָל רֹאֵינוּ,
May You send blessing in our every handiwork, and grant us peace, kindness, and mercy in your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us.
כִּי אל שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה וְתַחֲנוּן אַתָּה.
May You hear the sound of our supplication, because You are the God who hears prayer and supplications.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה לפי נוסח ספרד יי שׁוֹמֵעַ תְּפִלָּה:
Blessed are You, Eternal One, who hears prayer.
And please, HAVAYAH, our God, make the words of Your Torah pleasant in our mouths and in the mouths of all of Your people, the House of Israel. And may we and our offspring [and the offspring of our offspring] and the offspring of Your people, the House of Israel - all of us - be knowing of Your Name and studying Your Torah for its sake. Blessed are You, HAVAYAH, Who teaches Torah to Her people, Israel.
Blessed are You, HAVAYAH, our God, Queen of the Universe, who has chosen us from all of the nations and gives us Her Torah. Blessed are You, HAVAYAH, Giver of Torah.
