Adam: Don't try to communicate with ghosts and spirits.
Miya: G-d is everything. We cannot go "over" Him, even if you think that He is not there or He is not helping you.
(7) The great book on this subject is the book On the Nabatean Agriculture, translated by Ibn Wahshiya. In a succeeding chapter I shall explain why the Sabeans had their religious doctrines written in a work on agriculture. The book is full of the absurdities of idolatrous people, and with those things to which the minds of the multitude easily turn and adhere [perseveringly]; it speaks of talismans, the means of directing the influence [of the stars]; witchcraft, spirits, and demons that dwell in the wilderness. There occur also in this book great absurdities, which are ridiculous in the eyes of intelligent people. They were intended as a criticism and an attack on the evident miracles by which all people learnt that there exists a God who is judge over all people. Comp. "That thou mayest know how that the earth is the Lord's" (Exod. 9:29), "That I am the Lord in the midst of the earth" (ibid. 8:18).
Dybbukim and other malign spirit visitors – only in the past? A dybbuk is the wandering spirit of a deceased person, who has been unable to enter purgatory or paradise. The dybbuk usually enters a low-status member of Eastern-European Jewish society; women and children being most commonly possessed. The spirit is usually very badly-behaved, notably accusing respected members of the community of embarrassing sexual sins.

The Torah seems to be very interested in one commandment in particular, so much so that this commandment is repeated three times in Kedoshim, which is only two chapters long. Is it the commandment about rising in the presence of our elders? Or about having honest weights and measures? Or about avoiding certain sexual relationships? No–the only commandment that is repeated three times in this portion prohibits consulting ghosts or familiar spirits (Leviticus 19:31, 20:6, 20:27).....
And why should we avoid the “familiar spirits?” The Hebrew word is yid`onim, which the commentators understand to be the name of a bone through which a diviner speaks....We might interpret the word yid`onim, then, to mean something that appears to help expand our awareness but does so in a warped or distorted way. Perhaps we are being warned away from substances that might confuse us, or even qualities that seem righteous but which end up feeding our smaller selves and leading us away from true holiness.
So now we can return to our thrice-mentioned commandment with fresh eyes. “Do not turn to ghosts and do not inquire of familiar spirits to be defiled by them; I am YHVH your God.” In our journey towards living with greater holiness, keep seeking what is fresh and renewed; do not turn to the lifeless past for inspiration–yet insist on what is actual expanded awareness; do not allow yourself to settle for false spiritual expressions. YHVH is our God, ever becoming, ever flowing with holiness. When we truly know that, we too can be holy, and live holy lives.
Micah: When you are asleep and your soul goes to G-d, is it possible for another spirit to enter your body because there is an emptiness then?
Jackson: It is kind of like when you are at work. At the end of the day, and you are not working anymore. It is like that with your soul. At the end of the day, and your soul stops doing its job and it can take its break until the end of the night and it is returned to you and the soul has to go back to work.
