When people say "Knowledge is Power" it can be traced back to this line:

A wise man is strong; Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

But look at the line immediately following it:

For with wise advice thou shalt make thy war; And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Knowledge is power because you can wage war effectively with it!

Often when people say "Knowledge is power" they are saying it as a kind of self justification for gaining knowledge, as if consuming or spreading knowledge were something that built power. But this is missing half the quote.

Here's a more recent translation where the emphasis on power as a force rather than a quality even more explicit.

A wise man is strength;
A knowledgeable man exerts power;

And note that it's more about what a knowledgeable man ought to do - exert power (be powerful / have an impact on the world)

And it's even more clear in the line that follows:

For by stratagems you wage war,
And victory comes with much planning.

Knowledge -> Good Plan -> Victory
