Rav Avira taught: In the merit of the righteous women that were in that generation, the Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt.
Amram took his aunt Yocheved for his wife and she bore him Aharon and Moshe. The years of Amram’s life were one hundred and thirty-seven years.
(59) The name of Amram’s wife was Yocheved daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; she bore to Amram Aharon and Moshe and their sister Miriam.
(2) The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw how beautiful he was [ki tov hu], she hid him for three months.
The verse states: “and when she saw him that he was a goodly child [ki tov hu]” (Exodus 2:2). It is taught in a baraita that Rabbi Meir says: Tov is his name.
In fact,
I brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I redeemed you from the house of bondage,
And I sent before you
Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
The Holy One Blessed Be He said to Bitya, daughter of Pharaoh, "Moses was not your son, but you called him your son. Even though you are not my daughter, I call you my daughter." As it is said... Bitya - Bat (daughter of) Ya (God).
The female firstborns also died, except for Batya the daughter of Pharaoh who had a good (tov) defender; that was Moshe, as it is stated (Exodus 2:2), "and she saw that he was goodly (tov)." Hence Shlomo said "She has understanding as her merchandise is good." "And she gets up while it is still night" (Proverbs 31:15) - in what night? "And it was in the middle of the night."
[A woman of valor, who can find ...] Many women have done well (Proverbs 31:29) ... "She rises while it is still night" - this is Batya, the daughter of Pharaoh. She was a gentile and became a Jews and they mentioned her name among the honorable [women], since she took care of Moses. Therefore she merited and entered the Garden of Eden in her lifetime.
"And he became her son" ... Because she raised him, he became her son.
[MOSES.] Moshe (Moses) is a Hebrew form of an Egyptian name. Moses was called Monyos in Egyptian. The name is so written in a book on agriculture which was translated from Egyptian into Arabic. This is also recorded in the books of the Greek scholars. Perhaps the daughter of Pharaoh learned our language, or she asked some one for its Hebrew version. Do not be perplexed as to why moshe was not called mashuy, as nouns do not keep their forms as verbs do.
“And she called his name ‘Moshe’” – From here you can learn about the merit of those that perform acts of kindness. Even though Moses had many names, the only name that was set throughout the Torah, was the name that Batyah daughter of Pharaoh called him. Even the Holy One Blessed is He did not call him by another name.
Moses was known by 10 names: Jered, Chever, Yekutiel, Avigdor, Avi-Socho, Avi-Zanoch ... Tuvia ... Shmaya ... Levi ... and Moses, which makes 10.
The Holy One said to Moses, Behold! From among all the names from which you are known, I only refer to you by the name that Batya, Pharaoh's daughter, named you.
