יהוה spoke to Moses, saying:
Mark, the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be a sacred occasion for you: you shall practice self-denial, and you shall bring an offering by fire to יהוה;
you shall do no work throughout that day. For it is a Day of Atonement, on which expiation is made on your behalf before your God יהוה.
Indeed, any person who does not practice self-denial throughout that day shall be cut off from kin;
and whoever does any work throughout that day, I will cause that person to perish from among the people.
Do no work whatever; it is a law for all time, throughout the ages in all your settlements.
שַׁבַּ֨ת שַׁבָּת֥וֹן הוּא֙ לָכֶ֔ם וְעִנִּיתֶ֖ם אֶת־נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶ֑ם בְּתִשְׁעָ֤ה לַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ בָּעֶ֔רֶב מֵעֶ֣רֶב עַד־עֶ֔רֶב תִּשְׁבְּת֖וּ שַׁבַּתְּכֶֽם׃ {פ}
It shall be a sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall practice self-denial; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall observe this your sabbath.
(1) אך — The words אך and רק wherever they occur in Scripture have a limitative force; here the word implies: it (Yom Kippur) makes expiation for those who repent, but it does not make expiation for those who do not repent (אך... יום הכפורים הוא — in a limitative sense it is Yom Kippur) (Shevuot 13a; cf. Rashi on Exodus 34:7).
I WILL DESTROY — This expression “destroying” is employed here because Scripture uses everywhere in similar cases the term כרת, “cutting off” without clearly defining it, so that I do not know exactly what it implies; but when it states here והאבדתי, it teaches in respect of the term כרת that it implies nothing else than becoming lost” (Sifra, Emor, Chapter 14 4). (1)
[YE SHALL NOT DO] ANY WORK — This is repeated (cf v. 30) in order to make one who does work on Yom Kippur transgress several negative commands. Or, it is repeated, in order to prohibit working in the night of Yom Kippur, just as well as working during the day itself (Yoma 81a).

QUESTIONS
what is the spiritual dynamic of YK?What does it mean to "atone"?
What can we do on a deeper level - eg as a kapara?

To explain: Yom Kippur is the only day of the year on which we are obligated to recite five different prayer services. These five services reflect the five levels of the soul: nefesh, ruach, neshamah, chayah, and yechidah.37 Neilah, the fifth prayer service, which is recited only on Yom Kippur, gives expression to the level of yechidah, the aspect of the soul which is bound to G‑d with singular oneness. At this level, nothing is of concern except G‑d and the souls of Israel.
This is the meaning of the word neilah — that all the gates are locked; no one else is allowed in. The Jewish people are alone with G‑d.
Although this degree of connection is primarily revealed in the Neilah prayer,38 in a more general sense it applies throughout the day of Yom Kippur,39 for Yom Kippur is “a day on which five prayer services are required.”40 Although each service has its time (the evening service, the morning service, etc.), the entire day is “a day on which five prayer services are required,” i.e., the fifth level, the level of yechidah shines throughout the day.
Likkutei Sichos, Volume 4, P. 1149ff. Adapted from the maamar entitled Vichol Adam, 5723, [1962,] and a sichah delivered at Simchas Beis HaShoevah, 5723, [1962]

(10) Once a year Aaron shall perform purification upon its horns with blood of the sin offering of purification; purification shall be performed upon it once a year throughout the ages. It is most holy to ה'.
(16) Thus he shall purge the Shrine of the impurity and transgression of the Israelites, whatever their sins; and he shall do the same for the Tent of Meeting, which abides with them in the midst of their impurity.
~ The ritual of purification is described in chapter 16 of Leviticus. The entire chapter is read on Yom Kippur, and when we read the parsha called "Aharei Mot", there you have the sacrifices and the two goats, one of them being the scapegoat.
~ According to the sources above, what is the entire Yom Kippur ritual supposed to accomplish?
Below we have just the verses we will be using in our class.

(7) On the tenth day of the same seventh month you shall observe a sacred occasion when you shall practice self-denial. You shall do no work. (8) You shall present to ה' a burnt offering of pleasing odor: one bull of the herd, one ram, seven yearling lambs; see that they are without blemish. (9) The meal offering with them—of choice flour with oil mixed in—shall be: three-tenths of a measure for a bull, two-tenths for the one ram, (10) one-tenth for each of the seven lambs. (11) And there shall be one goat for a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering of expiation and the regular burnt offering with its meal offering, each with its libation.

(1) On Yom Kippur, one mustn't engage in eating and in drinking, and in bathing, and in smearing oil on one’s body, and in wearing shoes, and in conjugal relations. However, the king and the bride may wash their faces on Yom Kippur. A woman after childbirth may wear shoes. This is the statement of Rabbi Eliezer. The Rabbis prohibit all those.

~ What does mishnah 9 explain about the limits of teshuvah itself? What are the limits of God's forgiveness? Why is that important?
