Ze'ev Wolf of Zhitomir on Song of Songs 5:13 (from Or haMe'ir)
His cheeks are like beds of spices,
Banks of perfume
His lips are like lilies;
They drip flowing myrrh.
His cheeks (are) like a bed of balm, watchtowers of fragrant spices”. [Song of Songs 5:13]. And Rashi’s commentary: ‘“Watchtowers of fragrant spices”, balm plants which they mix by means of apothecary’s work.’ And it appears that the explanation is [here] what the Sages told concerning the verse “Moshe will speak and God will answer him with a voice” (Exodus 19:20), and these [words] arose: “by the voice of Moses” [Talmud Bavli 45a].
And it is necessary to explain their words: the intention [is that] Moses extended the Torah from the aspect of Voice to the aspect of Speech, and see, these are the Ten Commandments. In truth, Israel will say that it is impossible for a human being to comprehend the majesty of his Godhead, blessed be He, and His wonderful and terrifying mysteries, except through an aspect
being renewed, through what they are renewing in the Torah, and the light that is in it [=in the Torah; possibly referring to the Or ha-Ganuz that is hidden in the Torah; see i.e. Sefer Me'or Einayim, Parashat Shemot] is revealed by means of the souls of the righteous, who are renewing the mysteries of the Torah [these words in Aramaic] in every generation, as the need for them[selves is] and for the people that are depending on them [the righteous ones] and obeying them, warned by what is good also.
Everything by means of the combinations [of characters] which they renew in the Torah. And apparently when Moses our teacher extended the Torah from [the aspect of] Voice to the aspect of Speech, and “the word of the king may not be rescinded” [Midrash Tanchuma, Vayeshev 2/Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 38]; when he [the king] tells [something], he does not return and tell [it again]. And to this they [the Sages] referred with their words: ‘“And God
answered with a voice”, with the voice of Moses’ [Talmud Bavli 45a], as if to say: as [it happened] then so [it happens] now. He who has inside him [something] of the knowledge (Da’at) of his Creator is called Moses, in the manner of “Moses, you speak beautifully”[Talmud BavliT Sabbat 101b ], as to say that “great love was made known to them” [reference to Pirkei Avot 3:15], out of the greatness of His Mercy (Chesed), blessed be He, he answered Moses according to
his [Moses’] power [reference to Psalm 29:4?] then, [and] also now the righteous of the generation He will answer with a Voice as to say giving him [the righteous one] a listening heart to return the aspect of the Speech to the aspect of Voice, as the necessity concerning the worship then in that generation [at Sinai] as the era and the time, and from this Voice
he [the righteous one] can combine combinations being made new, and from this are born also new pleasures for Him, blessed be He.
