The Consecration of Jewish Identity as Symbolic Construction of the Collective
In the Hebrew Bible, the collective identity of the Jewish People is explicitly declared consecrated. The dramatic designation appears in Exodus 19:1-6 in the message to the People of Israel before the event at Sinai:
(1) On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, on that very day, they entered the wilderness of Sinai. (2) Having journeyed from Rephidim, they entered the wilderness of Sinai and encamped in the wilderness. Israel encamped there in front of the mountain, (3) and Moses went up to God. יהוה called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel: (4) ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me. (5) Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine, (6) but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”
This theme is echoed elsewhere in Tanakh (see for example, Deuteronomy 7:6-8; 14:2; Isaiah 61:6; Psalms 114:1-2). This case appears as a symbolic construction of collective designation which structures group identity - in this case, of the tribal nation - and orients its collective discourse toward ethical responsibility and national purpose. The embedding of this symbolic designation within the Sinai narrative is indicative of the formative quality of this symbolic act. In this case, the designation of the People of Israel as a consecrated kingdom carries the explicit intention of binding the ritual and the ethical; national purpose is fulfilled when the Mosaic commands are observed. But implicitly, the text offers a discourse of national maintenance; peoplehood is preserved not merely by shared ancestry (not all of Abraham's children join the covenant) or geography (Sinai is not located in a sovereign territory) but through shared purpose.

(6) For you are a people consecrated to your God יהוה: of all the peoples on earth your God יהוה chose you to be God’s treasured people. (7) It is not because you are the most numerous of peoples that יהוה grew attached to you and chose you—indeed, you are the smallest of peoples; (8) but it was because יהוה favored you and kept the oath made to your fathers that יהוה freed you with a mighty hand and rescued you from the house of bondage, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
