This is the bread of poverty which our ancestors ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat, Let all who are needy come and celebrate the Passover.

Now we are here, next year we will be in the land of Israel; now we are slaves, next year we will be free.

This matzo that we are eating, what does is commemorate?

It commemorates that our ancestors' dough was not yet able to rise, before the King of of kings, the Blessed Holy One, revealed [God's self] to them and redeemed them, as it is stated (Exodus 12:39);

"And they baked the dough which they brought out of Egypt into matzo, since it did not rise; because they were expelled from Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they made for themselves provisions."

It happened once, that Rabbi Eliezer, Rabbi Yehoshua, Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Tarfon were reclining in Bnei Brak and were telling the story of the exodus from Egypt that whole night, until their students came and said to them, "The time of [reciting] the morning Shema has arrived."

(12) Once, Rabban Gamliel and the elders were reclining in the house of Boethus ben Zonin in Lod, and they were occupied in studying the laws of Pesach all that night, until the cock crowed. They lifted the table, made themselves ready and went to the house of study [to pray].

It was taught in the mishna that the father begins his answer with disgrace and concludes with glory. The Gemara asks: What is the meaning of the term: With disgrace? Rav said that one should begin by saying: At first our forefathers were idol worshippers, before concluding with words of glory. And Shmuel said: The disgrace with which one should begin his answer is: We were slaves.
