(28) When Lamech had lived 182 years, he begot a son. (29) And he named him Noah, saying, “This one will provide us relief*relief Connecting Noah with Heb. niḥam “to comfort”; cf. 9.20ff. from our work and from the toil of our hands, out of the very soil which יהוה placed under a curse.” (30) After the birth of Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and begot sons and daughters. (31) All the days of Lamech came to 777 years; then he died. (32) When Noah had lived 500 years, Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

(5) יהוה saw how great was human wickedness on earth—how every plan devised by the human mind was nothing but evil all the time. (6) And יהוה regretted having made humankind on earth. With a sorrowful heart, (7) יהוה said, “I will blot out from the earth humankind whom I created—humans together with beasts, creeping things, and birds of the sky; for I regret that I made them.” (8) But Noah found favor with יהוה. (9) This is the line of Noah.—Noah was a righteous man; he was blameless in his age; Noah walked with God.— (or the translation according to Everett Fox:
These are the begettings of Noah.
Noah was a righteous, wholehearted man in his generation;
in accord with God did Noah walk.)
Cheyn is the language of unearned favor (chinam). (Bereishit Rabbah 30:10)

(10) And on the seventh day the waters of the Flood came upon the earth. (11) In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day
All the fountains of the great deep burst apart,
And the floodgates of the sky broke open. (12) (The rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.) (13) That same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, went into the ark, with Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons— (14) they and all beasts of every kind, all cattle of every kind, all creatures of every kind that creep on the earth, and all birds of every kind, every bird, every winged thing. (15) They came to Noah into the ark, two each of all flesh in which there was breath of life. (16) Thus they that entered comprised male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him. And יהוה shut him in. (17) The Flood continued forty days on the earth, and the waters increased and raised the ark so that it rose above the earth. (18) The waters swelled and increased greatly upon the earth, and the ark drifted upon the waters. (19) When the waters had swelled much more upon the earth, all the highest mountains everywhere under the sky were covered. (20) Fifteen cubits higher did the waters swell, as the mountains were covered. (21) And all flesh that stirred on earth perished—birds, cattle, beasts, and all the things that swarmed upon the earth, and all humankind. (22) All in whose nostrils was the merest breath of life, all that was on dry land, died. (23) All existence on earth was blotted out—humans, cattle, creeping things, and birds of the sky; they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. (24) And when the waters had swelled on the earth one hundred and fifty days,

(1) But God remembered Noah and all living-things, all the animals that were with him in the ark,
and God brought a rushing-wind across the earth, so that the waters abated.
(2) The wellsprings of Ocean and the sluices of the heavens were dammed up,
and the torrent from the heavens was held back.
(3) The waters returned from upon the earth, advancing and returning,
and the waters diminished at the end of a hundred and fifty days.
(4) The ark came to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
(5) Now the waters advanced and diminished until the tenth month.
In the tenth, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains could be seen.
(6) It was at the end of forty days: Noah opened the window of the ark that he had made,
(7) and sent out a raven;
it went off, going off and returning, until the waters were dried up from upon the earth.
(8)Then he sent out a dove from him, to see whether the waters had subsided from the face of the ground.
(9)But the dove found no resting-place for the sole of her foot,
so she returned to him into the ark,
for there was water upon the face of all the earth. He sent forth his hand and took her, and brought her to him into the ark.
(10) Then he waited yet another seven days
and sent out the dove yet again from the ark.
(11)The dove came back to him at eventime, and here, a freshly plucked olive leaf in her beak! So Noah knew
that the waters had subsided from upon the earth.
(12)Then he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, but she returned to him again no more.

(13) In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the waters began to dry from the earth; and when Noah removed the covering of the ark, he saw that the surface of the ground was drying. (14) And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. (15) God spoke to Noah, saying, (16) “Come out of the ark, together with your wife, your sons, and your sons’ wives. (17) Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you: birds, animals, and everything that creeps on earth; and let them swarm on the earth and be fertile and increase on earth.” (18) So Noah came out, together with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. (19) Every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that stirs on earth came out of the ark by families. (20) Then Noah built an altar to יהוה and, taking of every pure animal and of every pure bird, he offered burnt offerings on the altar. (21) יהוה smelled the pleasing odor, and יהוה resolved: “Never again will I doom the earth because of humankind, since the devisings of the human mind are evil from youth; nor will I ever again destroy every living being, as I have done.

(18) The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth—Ham being the father of Canaan. (19) These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole world branched out. (20) Noah, the tiller of the soil,was the first to plant a vineyard. (21) He drank of the wine and became drunk, and he uncovered himself within his tent. (22) Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father’s nakedness and told his two brothers outside. (23) But Shem and Japheth took a cloth, placed it against both their backs and, walking backward, they covered their father’s nakedness; their faces were turned the other way, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. (24) When Noah woke up from his wine and learned what his youngest son had done to him, (25) he said,
“Cursed be Canaan;
The lowest of slaves
Shall he be to his brothers.” (26) And he said,
“Blessed be יהוה,
The God of Shem;
Let Canaan be a slave to them.
(27) May God enlarge*enlarge Heb. yapht, play on Heb. yepheth “Japheth.” Japheth,
And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be a slave to them.” (28) Noah lived after the Flood 350 years. (29) And all the days of Noah came to 950 years; then he died.
Responding to Addiction and Trauma
How will we react when we see people behaving in ways that cause us to feel shocked or uncomfortable. It's so easy to write someone off as disturbed, as someone who has problems and to mentally outcast them from the circle of society that we think we belong to. But these labels don't account for the causes beneath the behaviors. In a sense they discount the experience and humanity of the person standing before us and protect us from having to look ourselves in the mirror of humanity that they hold.
The questions we need to be asking ourselves are not what's wrong with this person, but what might have happened to this person that's causing them so much pain. Especially now as the world is waking up more and more to the effects of trauma. Reading Noah's story through this lens, gives me a sense of hopefulness that the Torah seems to be pointing to this kind of process in one of the most fundamental stories of humankind.
......
This story offers me a degree of comfort in knowing that our suffering is not new. We're not the first people to lose our bearings, to lose the familiar sources of support. To me this story provides a powerful reminder of the need to be curious, to care for ourselves and for one another and seek out the kinds of support that we are all deserving of and can all benefit from.

Trying to Understand the Dove and the Raven in a Beit Midrash of Birds
The eagle went and brought the raven, who was advanced in years, his wings dry and gray, limping in flight. The inhabitants of the beit midrash said to him: Why do you fly back and forth and find no rest?
He said, Where should I stand, and where should I rest my wings? Anywhere I try to stand, the dead eyes of my brothers and sisters stare at me. And anywhere I try to sit, the earth stirs, and groans, and the weeping voice of my brother’s blood rises upward from it.
They answered, But the dove found land on which grass grows, and took an olive branch in its mouth, and then went, and blossomed, and sought out a new life, and she is still giving birth even now. And it is written the waters left firm ground upon the earth (Gen 8:13) and the earth is waiting for you and those like you, for thousands of years now, to come back.
At that moment, the sun began to set, and the sky seemed to them as red as blood.
The inhabitants of the beit midrash cast their eyes upon the dove, and saw that she was tired and weeping. They looked at that raven and saw that he was losing his mind.
They looked upon the Shekhinah and saw that She was spreading Her wings, and they were large, and a warm wind emanated from them.
The Shekhinah arose from Her place and went over to the dove and the raven and sheltered them with Her wings.
The raven ceased his flight. The dove’s soul was rested.
And some say that at this moment one could hear the murmuring of the Shekhinah saying to those birds who dwelled in the beit midrash, What do you know about the dove and the raven, you are not doves, or ravens, and it wasn’t you who were sent forth from that window, to go and look.
