Kins: there's so much that can be said like my father used to say at the pesach seder "i can go on for 3 hours if u want"

וְשַׁבְתֶּם וּרְאִיתֶם בֵּין צַדִּיק לְרָשָׁע בֵּין עֹבֵד אֱלֹהִים לַאֲשֶׁר לֹא עֲבָדוֹ

The Menoras HaMaor quotes the Medrash Tanchumah, which does not appear in our version of Tanchumah, as follows:

There was once a pious man who was secluded in a certain area and he studied Masechet Chagigah. He would study the Masechet over and over, until he learned it so well and he was so familiar with the Masechet. He did not know any other Masechet in the Talmud, and he would only study Masechet Chagigah.

When he departed the world, he was alone and there was no one who knew of his passing. The apparition of a woman arrived and stood before him, and she raised her voice in wailing and eulogy. She moaned and cried so loud until a crowd gathered. She then told the people who had gathered, “Eulogize this pious man and bury him and show honor to his coffin and you will all merit the World to Come. The reason I ask you to do this is because he honored me his entire life and I was not forsaken and forgotten.”

Immediately all the women came and sat with her and they made a great eulogy and the men took care of the deceased’s shrouds and all of his burial needs. They then buried him with great honor and the woman was wailing and crying. The people asked her, “What is your name?” She responded, “My name is Chagigah.” Subsequent to the man’s burial, the woman disappeared from view. Immediately the people understood that she was really Masechet Chagigah, who appeared in the image of a woman. She had appeared at the time of the man’s death so that he would be eulogized and cried over, and that he would receive an honorable burial.

This was all due to the fact that he had constantly studied Masechet Chagigah and was diligent in studying it. This teaches us a kal vachomer: If this pious man who only studied one tractate received all this honor, then certainly if one studies much Torah and teaches Torah to others, and gains many students, certainly he will earn a great reward.

2) The Talmud in Chagigah 9b teaches: “There is no comparison between one who studies [a section of Torah] one hundred times and one who studies it one hundred and one times”. The Kli Yakar, in his commentary to Deuteronomy 4:9, teaches that this idea of reviewing what we learn 101 times is alluded to in Gematria as follows: The Hebrew word for “forgetting” is shachach, which has the numerical value of 328 (shachach is spelled shin, chuf, ches; shin = 300, chuf = 20, ches = 8, totaling 328). The Hebrew word for “remembering” is zachar, which equals 227 (zachar is spelled zayin, chuf, reish; zayin = 7, chuf = 20, reish = 200, totaling 227). The difference between shachach, forgetting, and zachar, remembering, is 101. If we want to erase the difference between forgetting the Torah that we learn and remembering it, we need to review it 101 times!

Once someone learns something 100 times, he can rest assured that he knows it. He will not be forgetting it so quickly. So why would he review it a 101st

time? Only out of deep love and dedication.

NEW (8/26/16) : Moses Montefiore story (went to Czar to intercede, traveling thru Warsaw called a zhid, stopped his coach, had the kid apprehended, told him I have been called great things but yours is the greatest, gave him a gold coin. Ish Yehudi haya b'Shushshan ben kis ish yemini, muchtar b'nimussin (see below)

Dateline: 1880

Place: Czarist Russia, on the road to Moscow

Speeding along the highway is a handsome carriage drawn by six snow-white stallions. Inside the carriage sits the famous Sir Moses Montefiore, a wealthy English Jew, a Member of British Parliament, and a world-renowned philanthropist.

After hearing of the government-sponsored pogroms in Russia that embittered the lives of thousands of Jews, Montefiore traveled to Moscow to personally intervene with Czar Nicolai to ease the burden on the Jews. Montefiore's emblem, with Hebrew letters, was displayed prominently on both sides of the carriage, causing much consternation among the Russian peasants - chagrined over the fact that such a royal carriage could belong to a Jew.

As the carriage slowed down, a rock hit its side with a loud thud. A young boy at the side of the road screamed at the top of his lungs: "Zhid! Zhid! (Jew! Jew!)" and promptly ran off as fast as he could. Montefiore immediately ordered his driver to stop the carriage and catch the stone-thrower. As the chase went on, Montefiore became very emotional, since this was the first time he had ever been the target of an anti-Semitic act

.

When his men caught the culprit, he was brought red-faced before a trembling Montefiore. The boy expected a good thrashing. Instead he got a little lecture translated into Russian. "My boy, I must tell you that I have been called many titles in my career. They call me Lord, Sir, Member of Parliament and distinguished gentleman. However, the title that you called me is the one I am the most proud of. So I sincerely would like to thank you." And with that he released the shocked boy.
